[Solved] Using mp4-videos in a slideshow

Post by Juergen Peters » Thu Jun 27, 2013 11:35 pm

I am using Open Office 3.4.1 for preparing a slide show in a presentation (Windows XP)
In slide # 21for example there will be text on black background. By way of inserting a hyperlink the video is activated. it works fine in the normal working mode. But as soon as I switch to full screen, the pictures will not appear but the sound is ok. I do not mind to insert another slide to start the video but doubt that it will help. There must be a way to hide the slide proper while the video is running and then to activate the slide again in order to continue the slide show.
Advice is kindly requested. J.P.

As far as I remember, in doing this one can add full screen command line parameters to the call to the system video player which will cause the video to play full screen, hiding the OpenOffice slide. I haven't done this in about three years, so am rusty on how to do it.
I'll have a look at an old presentation and see how I managed this full screen.

On the laptop I am using the video in a presentation is inserted into OpenOffice using the inbuilt media hooks; I converted it to a suitable format. I have an older presentation using hyperlinks; unfortunately my presentation test setup is at the other end of the house and is asleep at present, as is the rest of the house; for various reasons I won't get to that until this afternoon if then (real life demands I do Friday things). From memory, rather than hyperlink to a video file, I inserted a full path in the hyperlink to a video player and the video file needed - thus
vlc --fullscreen /Path/video.mp4.

To find the command line parameters for your system video player you will need to consult its documentation.

Thank you for the quick reply to the enquiry ! In the hurry I forgot to mention that I intend to use a beamer in order to present the slide show in November. It consists of 50 "slides" of which some have musik incorporated and 5 others have mp4-videos. The music-slides have the music embedded as mp3-files in the "gallery" and that works fine in so far as the music starts as soon as the slide appears and stops at its end. However video-films are mp4-files and will not be supported by the presentation system. In order to project them on the screen by a beamer I use the VLN Videolan program which works fine on its own. Both systems are coupled by the hyperlink. But since the OpenOffice slide naturally will not disappear, only the sound can be heard. For a proper presentation not good enough. So far I help myself by interrupting the OpenOffice slide show (push the escape button) and the video appears. Returning to the OpenOffice slide show is more triky! Well, perhaps a more elegant solution may be at hand in the future. J.P.

Perhaps the easy way is to convert the MP4 file to a format compatible with the presentation system, perhaps MPG or AVI. There are quite a number of downloadable converters available.

I have settled the problem by a smart shift management of slides. To convert mp4-videos into other forms may be risky for the loss of qualitiy.
Hence I tested the following procedure:
1. from the full screen view of e.g. slide 3 press Esc-button; that will show the task rail with the Videolan symbol (which system I am using because of its mp4 capability).
2. Activate the Videolan player and open the mp4-file in question.
3. Play the video to the end wich will then show the videolan symbol in the center.
4. Exit Videolan by the Strg + Q command
5. go to the next slide which will, at the "normal" or "standard" mode, show at the bottom of the following slide the 3 commands 'start slide show' , 'hide slide', duplicate slide'.
6. click on 'start slide show" which will continue the presentation.

Of course this is not an acceptable procedure for a demanding audience but within a family show or an intimate circle it will work quite well. My current presentation is thus equipped with 5 videos and it works sufficientliy well. Experts on Open office Impress might even be able to write a macro for such mixtures.

Thank you for the good advice given.
J. Peters.
